I have codiene but not sure if im allergic to it, will this work?

I was prescribed promethazine with codeine syrup and my father was deathly allergic to it. This being the first time ive tryed it, would it br a good idea to rub some on my tongue before actually ingesting it? Or would that not be conclusive in determining if id be ok taking it?
