Why do some Michael Jackson fans claim (falsely) that he broke the racial barrier in music?

I loved when O'Reilly was telling Sharpton, MJ was not an icon for black people, what barriers did he break? When he decided to have kids, why did he have white kids? Sharpton said his private life had nothing do with him being an icon, really?
